About Lutheran Archives
Lutheran Archives is a department of the LCANZ Churchwide Office. The archive gathers and preserves stories of the Lutheran Church from all over Australia, New Zealand and wherever the church has had a ministry. We share the stories of the LCANZ across the church and in the wider public. We enable others to encounter these stories through research, so they can share their stories and experiences of love coming to life.
Unlike many other church archive environments, Lutheran Archives is a repository for the whole LCANZ, bringing together the records of the agencies of the church, districts, congregations and individuals.
mission
To ensure the records of our church are available for the church and wider community to access, remember and reflect, and to share today and for generations to come.
vision
To be recognised as the primary resource for records of the LCANZ, where they are appropriately and sustainably collected, preserved and made accessible to the church and wider community.
Adopted by Committee of Lutheran Archives, July 2023

Committee of Lutheran Archives (CoLA)
CoLA is a committee of the Office of the Bishop that provides support and advice to the Director, Lutheran Archives to:
- ensure the ministry of Lutheran Archives is understood by the Lutheran community;
- support the church to create, capture and manage its records;
- ensure records of permanent value are deposited at Lutheran Archives
- Ensure the collective story of the church can be accessed, encountered and disseminated by Lutherans and the wider community;
- develop and recommend strategic plans, ministry priorities and collection management policies.
Current goals
1. Digitisation of magnetic media audio-visual records
2. Appraisal and rehousing of published works collections
3. Digitisation of original parish registers, and creation of digital and physical access registers.
4. Physical and intellectual control, and accessibility through arrangement and description.
CoLA’s goals are:
1. Long-term financial stability
2. All permanent records of LCANZ are appropriately managed (including creation and access) and preserved either at Lutheran Archives or in situ in line with Lutheran Archives standards and procedures
3. Generate and increase community engagement.
Volunteers
A team of volunteers supports the professional staff of Lutheran Archives by undertaking a range of tasks, such as indexing, transcription and translation, cataloguing and listing, digitising, rehousing, promotion and events and much more. The Lutheran Archives Collection would not be as accessible and discoverable as it is today without the energy and skills of our incredible volunteer force.
Please email Lutheran Archives if you are interested in assisting us in our work and becoming part of the community. A valid police check is required.
